Howard University Downing Hall Chiller Upgrades (Washington, DC)
BDE partnered with JST Power Equipment, JW Frew Electric, and Shepherd Electric Supply to deliver a pre-assembled unit substation for Howard University’s Downing Hall, an engineering facility in Washington, DC. The team handled the design and supply of a medium voltage unit substation. Initially, the project was slated for a traditional “stick-built” approach, but JST Power’s pre-assembled solution was more cost-effective and space-efficient. In collaboration with Shepherd Electric, the team took precise measurements from the site and coordinated a direct connection with a Siemens UL891 switchboard, eliminating the need for a high voltage contractor to perform internal connections between the load interrupter switch and the transformer.
BDE and its partners worked together to install a new electrical system for an engineering building at Howard University. Instead of building the system piece by piece on-site, they used a pre-assembled system that saved space and money. By coordinating carefully, they connected the system to existing equipment, making the installation smoother and eliminating the need for extra work.
Despite challenges with space and delivery times, the collaboration between BDE, JST Power Equipment, JW Frew Electric, and Shepherd Electric Supply ensured the equipment was delivered and installed on time. This resulted in a cost-effective and efficient solution that supported the much-needed HVAC upgrades at the university facility.
